Selenitas Weyr
In the years after the discovery of Aivas, the world seemed to be at peace. The Weyrs lived in harmony as the Red Star disappeared back into the sky. Thread was gone forever, so it seemed, and the Pernese were now able to go about their ways. They learned new crafts, and learned more about technology that Aivas had left them information for. Everything seemed to advance.
Many new Weyrs were formed, where many junior weyrwomen left to, to make a name for themselves in a new land. One such Weyr was Selenitas Weyr, founded by a woman named Selenitas and her dragon, gold Elliarth. Choosing an unlikely spot by a waterfall, a Weyr blossomed forth from the current, the trees the home of the weyrfolk, the canyon the waterfall fed into soon housed the dragons, and an arena-type place was made for the Hatching Ground.
As quickly as good came, however, such drastic changes just did not grow onto the Pernese, and many of the ancient techniques were forgotten. Disputes among the Weyrs grew to be the focus of everyone’s attention, and nobody had the patience to deal with the Aivas information any longer. Instead, all eyes turned to the North. Benden and Fort in particular were growing uneasy with each other.
Most of the new Weyrs—and most of the old ones—could not last. With the Red Star gone, there was nothing to keep the dragon population large. One by one, Benden and Fort urged the other Weyrs to merge with them. However, the two Weyrs began to bicker about who got which Weyrs. This soon evolved into an argument over land. One would want many holds, while the other saw it as unjust. Fort, the oldest Weyr, and Benden, the largest, used their reputations to try and get what they want.
While the other Weyrs faded, Selenitas was barely just able to keep her Weyr growing. Since coming to her new home, Elliarth hadn’t clutched a single queen egg, and the aging Weyrwoman was growing desperate. However, as Selenitas turned fifty Turns old, Elliarth managed to produce a golden egg, the last one she would ever produce. Miraculously, this queen Impressed Selenitas’ daughter. Soon dubbed the line of Selenitas, it came to pass that the single golden egg of each generation would Impress the woman who came from Selenitas’ direct bloodline.
Fight for territory in the North slowly became warfare. Not only was it for territory, but for the Weyrs’ pride. They were each determined to control Pern, for they alone were the best. They ignored Selenitas- it was so small that it didn’t matter and they were capable of destroying it in a heartbeat, so they went to pressing matters first. They would fight each other, using dragons in combat, firestone to scorch dragons and their riders rather than Thread.
Selenitas Weyr was no help, either. They grew too proud, saying that they had such remarkable blood that they deserved nothing less than a queen for their daughters. Because of this pride, they treated the holds that were beholden to them like dirt. Their Weyr was akin to a dictatorship, demanding high tithes and pick of the children for dragonriding.
However, one day, Thread returned out of nowhere. The holdfolk were fearful, and the riders anxious. Neither of the three Weyrs was ready. Benden and Fort reluctantly went to the skies, only to fight each other the instant it was over. Selenitas was even more lost than the warring Weyrs. Weyrwoman Sera of gold Fath was getting old, and the population of her Weyr was so small that they weren’t able to properly fill their wings. Firestone was also nonexistent. They hadn’t mined any in Turns.
Managing to force the miners of Hyphen Hold to stop what they were doing and mine firestone, Selenitas Weyr soon took to the air. Unfortunately, they were ill-prepared even with firestone and casualties were high. However, in the midst of all the chaos, there was a glimmer of hope.
The one queen egg of the generation had been laid! Fath guarded her precious clutch on the sands, knowing how rare it was for her to actually lay a clutch, let alone a queen egg. Pleased that Selenitas would still be ruling, Sera put her daughter into the Hatching as a candidate, positive she would Impress the queen.
But she didn’t. Instead, the queen Aslath chose a new woman for herself, an unlikely candidate named Shmee. Shock came over the entire Weyr. Not only was it unheard of for the Line of Selenitas to be finished, but Shmee was downright immature. Was she to lead them all?
Sera and her daughter, the one who should have Impressed, rapidly declined. Out of shame, the daughter committed suicide, while Sera slowly grew ill. Not only heartbroken for her daughter’s death, she also was put under a lot of pressure. Some of the Holds began revolting against the Selenitas dictatorship, Thread was still difficult, and now Fort and Benden were rediscovering the lowly Weyr. Simply rejecting everything her title gave her, Shmee was forced into the stress of the Weyrwoman before Aslath was a Turn old.
Fortunately, Shmee handled it with grace, even though she was far from organized and mildly lazy. She knew the right people to talk to and who to flirt with to get to do what she wanted. Though she didn’t exactly calm down the Holds, she managed to tone things down into manageable sizes. Official wings were formed, and things began to grow more tolerable in the South.
Even though things were turning around, it still caught the Weyr off-guard when Fath managed to Rise yet again. Her Flight was her longest yet, making all of the weyrfolk amazed. They had no idea what sparked this intense Flight out of the old queen, but whatever made it so worked: Another queen egg lay on the sands, the first of the Selenitas golds to lay more than one egg in a lifetime.
This, however, was not meant to be. Within days of laying a clutch of fourteen eggs, Fath leapt between, and Sera died in her sleep that very instant. These deaths further added to the shock of the Weyr. Fath had seemed perfectly fine before that long Flight. Attributing it to the failing health of the Weyrwoman, they accepted it, giving Shmee the title as Senior Weyrwoman, even though Aslath had yet to Fly.
Adopting this clutch with the ugly, delicate eggs, Aslath watched over this clutch zealously, with Shmee in tow. The Weyrwoman, despite having this responsibility, showed no signs of seriousness. Instead, she proceeded to flirt on the Hatching Grounds, marking up which candidates she liked and didn’t like. Many whispered around her that she was obnoxious, even though she did have a way of handling people.
At this time, another gold suddenly appeared at Selenitas. Naming herself as Kaegan, the rider of Millieth, she described the horrors happening at Benden. Using what little technology remaining from records of Aivas and deadly plant toxins, they made drugs, used to enhance clutch sizes- yet all came at a cost. The dragonless healer Trenlor of Benden, the creator of such drugs, told them it would cause the health of the dragon to deteriorate, eventually making them go insane.
Though this thought disturbed Shmee, she didn’t let it stop her from what she did best. Hiding Kaegan and Millieth from Benden’s clutches, she acted like her normal, obnoxious self. Benden wouldn’t miss one of what would be many queens. What happened in the North was their own problem. Little did Shmee know that that problem would soon be given right into her hands.
The clutch was far from perfect. Instead of the strong dragons everyone believed would hatch, the hatchlings were hideously mutated. One was a photophobe, others missed limbs. However, the healthy-looking queen managed to find her bonded with no difficulties; she named herself Aezanth, and bonded to the candidate Paryal.
Shmee didn’t dwell on these happenings, for a note was delivered to her as she sat at the Hatching. Benden, somehow, had discovered Millieth’s presence, and requested for Shmee to come. Not seeing the harm, Shmee flew there naively.
She did not return the same. After witnessing the murder of a dragon hatchling and attempted assassination by the Weyrleader C’leon, Shmee returned to Selenitas, injured. Since realizing harsh reality of the Dragon Wars, the Weyrwoman went through a drastic personality change, cutting her hair and no longer being as flamboyant as she once was. Now was no longer the time for child’s play; Selenitas was now involved in this war, whether they like it or not. However, before anyone could do much of anything, Aslath rose for her first Mating Fight.
However, C'leon heard from two mysterious figures that Aslath was Rising, and he himself came to Selenitas, intending to take part in the Flight and win. After all, his bronze Morsrath had never lost a Flight. However, fate aided Selenitas, and Aslath's Flight ended prematurely with bronze Salenth, with his rider S'rei, winning the Flight and the title of Weyrleader. C'leon was too crazed by Flightlust to take advantage of them at such a time, and instead raped one of the candidates lingering outside the door.
Adding to the drama is a new species of draconic creature called salamandyrs, and one has just started her first Run. What will happen if she is Caught by flitters? Dragonless slaves have also started arriving in from Fort and Benden, poor half-humans who have lost their bondeds in the war and taken by the other side to be slaves. Bitra is slowly being revealed as a dirtied hold full of prostitutes and wild gangs of orphaned children, with some slowly trickling into the Weyr.
Now, even though Shmee now shares the power with S'rei, are they still going to be able to protect this struggling, peaceful Weyr, or will they be sent into full-fledged combat? As Aslath's clutch lay on the sands, Shmee discovered that she was pregnant-- only to be poisoned, aborting the child and nearly killing her. Fortunately, candidate Auryn caught the culprit, a healer named Trenlor, who declared his allegiance to Benden Weyr and his involvement with the mutated hatchlings and Shmee's miscarriage. After violently attacking S'rei and holding Auryn hostage, he was killed by an unknown assailant.
Now, as Threadfall rages on, the senior weyrlings are being brutally massacred by Benden, with the queenrider Paryal being the first to be murdered. Will they escape? Why can't the Selenitas riders come to their aid?
And now, to further complicate things, gold Millieth is about to Rise. But what will happen with her hatchlings? If she had underwent the same treatment of drugs that Fath did, will her hatchlings be deformed as well?
