Senara put the last finishing touches...to oiling Frikath that was. The blue spread his wings to catch the sunlight. Turns of partnership left few words exchanged between them, for in truth, few were needed.
The Hatching, Senara thought, had gone well...if one did not think about the dead hatchling. Still, a healthy gold had hatched and Impressed and that meant a lot, although she didn't know the girl it had chosen well. Holdbred, as they often were.
Krisara had been left Standing, but she had taken it well. She knew that she might have to face the eggs several times before being chosen. She had always envisioned her daughter on green, but these new colors...who knew what would happen with them. "Everything's changing," the bluerider said out loud.
Hadn't one of the new snows been *female*?

Sretoth landed at the edge of the Bowl, a fair distance from the lake, and then began running towards the water, spreading his wings and leaping just before he reached its edge and diving into the water with a great splash. This Mineral could never have too many baths, and of course was looking forward to this one.
A'vic approached only after Sretoth's display, knowing he would get wet enough washing the dragon and not wanting to let it start quite yet. He waved quickly to Krisara as he reached the edge of the lake. "How's Frikath?" He paused briefly to ask.
Oh, you had a bath too? Sretoth spread his great wings so they could get wet too and looked down at the Sea cheerfully. I love baths, don't you?
Yes, it had been sad at the Hatching when the Sea had died, and the two duds were disappointing, but twenty-two dragon had hatched successfully and that was what mattered. A good Sunshine, a female Waterfall, and plenty of others. Sretoth was very proud of himself and Lilith and wasn't going to be put out by those. Anyways, he now got to have a bath!

Frikath sent back, cheerfully, Baths are always good. Are you proud of the hatchlings?, he added as his rider's mind reminded him gently that Sretoth was the sire.
Senara smiled to the weyrleader. "Frikath's well, as am I." The older searider moved to lean against her dragon...her clothing was already pretty oily, so what was a little more?

Yes, they are all lovely. Personally, Sretoth would have perferred more Minerals, two seemed like such a small number out of twenty-five eggs, but the clutch was still very good. He wasn't quite sure what to think of the Snows though, a female, a drunk one, and that last tiny one... they all seemed rather odd to him.
"That's good." A'vic nodded and waded into the water, stopping again beside Sretoth. Torna and Dash popped abruptly from between; Dash, as usual, chirrupping loudly to announce his presence while Torna spiraled down to land on Sretoth's shoulder. Both of the fire-lizards were growing quickly, A'vic guessed that they were nearing their full size by now, judging by the rate his sister's Vir had grown. But they still needed oiling, just less food.
I told them they can be oiled too if they help with me, Sretoth commented absently. Torna had already reacted, ducking under the water to gather some sand to rub against the Mineral's hide, but Dash was more reluctant. A'vic always cared for them anyways, and Sretoth always said that.

Senara glanced at the firelizards. "Funny, I've never got around to getting one of those." Somehow, through all the Turns, there had always been more important things. Then her thoughts flickered back to the clutch. "Not many seas." Then again, the stormclouds and snows...they didn't need as many seas and grasses. Maybe things were settling to some new pattern.
To Sretoth, as he settled, Frikath flickered a thought of, Mine wishes her hatchling had Impressed one.

"My sister forced me to attend Xiri's hatching." A'vic rolled his eyes but laughed. "She's just wanted me to get one for forever and then these two Impressed..." Dash landed lightly on A'vic's shoulder, chattering away to anyone who felt like listening.
"Yeah, only two..." A'vic began rubbing sand against Sretoth's hide. The Mineral purred softly, his eyes whirling happy shades of blue. "There were only two Minerals too, more of the newer colors." Three Snows, Forests, Storm Clouds, Sands... a good mix, he supposed, but, like Sretoth, A'vic would have liked to see more Minerals, or maybe another male Waterfall.
Well, there will be more eggs. Hopefully she still will. Sretoth purred softly. He loved baths.

Senara nodded. "Maybe the new colors are hatching more to compensate for being new, to catch up with the older ones...not that there is anything wrong with any of them." She smiled a little bit. "More than two Minerals would have been nice, though."

"Maybe they are." A'vic shrugged. "I'm sure they would eventually without appearing more often in Sunshine clutches if the new colors were to clutch. They all rise more often and would probably lay more new colors." At least the Waterfalls he thought would clutch, but Maryth hadn't yet risen... so they would wait. She had come from the same clutch as Lilith had though, surely she would rise soon?

Senara shrugged. "No real sense...they're all good dragons, so it doesn't matter." She patted Frikath on the shoulder. "And to think, once, female blueriders were the novelty."
Frikath had chosen the one right for him. She knew that, and, thus, there was truly no sense to worrying about it Krisara would find hers too. Eventually.

"Yeah." A'vic nodded slightly. There were enough adult Minerals anyways to make up for not many hatching this time. "As we the new colors become more common it could just happen again." He chuckled softly. The Weyr's newest Sea had Impressed a girl too... maybe it wouldn't. But he still saw more male Blueriders around than female.
Dash finally decided that maybe he could be helpful and joined his smaller brother in washing Sretoth, who purred happily. Torna playfully splashed some water at the Forest though and soon they had both left Sretoth's side to play in the water.

Senara considered that. "There are weirder things going on...the female snow? That's new. And there's that dragon that can't make up his mind whether he's an earth or a forest."
That one, she thought, was rather...pretty. In an odd kind of way.

"I do like that Earth though," A'vic replied, smiling slightly. "It's different to have those colors together on one dragon... but nice. And I'm not quite sure what to think of the Snow. We've only had a few of them so far... maybe it's normal but just more likely to get males... I don't know." There were four males, one female... it was possible, if slightly improbible. But he couldn't think of any better reason for there to be a female Snow except that she's just another odd dragon.

Senara nodded. "That's most likely it. She's very pretty, though. I suspect Frikath will agree when she's older, too."
Of course, a female snow would be hard to catch...probably only a sea or snow could snag her, maybe a small forest. Unless there was a distinct size difference, and she saw none yet.

"She is." All of the hatchlings were pretty really, although the 'mudslide' Sand seemed a little odd at times, at least when watching her move. What would it be like when she flew...? There was much more movement then.
As pretty as the rest of them. Sretoth sniffed. Of course he wouldn't admit to any of the dragonets he had fathered to be anything less than beautiful.

They are all pretty, yes. the sea sent back, cheerfully.
Senara eyed Frikath. "You aren't allowed to eye up the smaller females until they're old enough to rise, you shameless blue."

Sretoth gave A'vic a snide glance. Frikath agrees that they are all pretty too.
A'vic laughed. I never said she was ugly... looking like a walking mudslide is a little odd sometimes though. Then he smiled at Senara. "I'm sure it doesn't hurt to get a headstart."
Of course not. Sretoth rumbled cheerfully.

Senara shook her head. "He's a big flirt...but he'll forget them for a while the next time a girl goes up," she said, flickering a grin to her dragon. "I think he finds the female snow fascinating, though."
Which was true. Because it was new...he'd reacted the same way to the first sands and storm clouds and female forests.

"I believe many are fascinated by her really." A'vic smiled slightly. Torna, apparently tiring of getting beaten in their splash-war by his brother, took into the air to land lightly on A'vic's shoulder and then give his body a violent shake to clear it of water. Dash, at least, had the thought to remove his wetness onto something else already wet- Sretoth. The Mineral loved both fire-lizards and didn't mind at all as the Forest landed on his shoulder.

Senara nodded. "There haven't been that many snows. I bet there will be more female ones." She shrugged a little bit. "Sretoth's looking well."
Much bigger than her own dragon, the mineral -did- look in good shape...of course, he'd never have caught Lilith if he wasn't. Then the firelizard shook himself and she laughed. "At least Frikath doesn't do -that-."

"I've sort of been thinking that." A'vic nodded.
Of course I do. Sretoth gave a vain sniff, then rumbled.
"Sretoth says he always looks well," A'vic laughed. Sretoth's eyes whirled cheerily. The Mineral probably did though... A'vic wouldn't let him fall out of shape, and even without the rider's urging, Sretoth probably wouldn't let himself either.
Torna turned to Senara and chirped brightly. A'vic smiled. "Yeah, that'd be a pain. Sretoth doesn't either, thankfully." A dragon of his size could make a new lake, A'vic figured, by shaking himself dry. A small one at least.
You exagerrate. I could never carry that much water. Sretoth's skeptical voice made A'vic laugh- although the Mineral seemed to try to joke a lot, he never seemed to quite get it when his rider did.
