Nyocia Weyr
16th Pass: The Beginning Turn
Sr'yn's Diary
' AVIAS? Yes, AVIAS was found. The dragon riders moved the red star as well. That, that was a long time ago.
Everyone was happy that Thread was never going to return. The riders disbanded the Weyrs to make Weyrholds for themselves in the South, never having to rise again to fight Thread. Every now and then people would get Searched to Impress a dragon at one of the even scarcer Hatchings...the dragons were dying.
Pass after Pass came, no Thread fell. Occasionally a shooting star would fall to Pern, one that had to be intercepted by the dragons. Eventually though, their numbers grew so low that they couldn't even do this properly.
There were only two Queens left, one was too old to clutch anymore. The entire fate of dragonkind rested on one golden pair of shoulders, well her and her chosen mate. She rose, her final Flight, and was caught by the largest Bronze. Everyone waited for her to clutch, waited, waited.
She didn't clutch in the usual spot. She clutched in an old volcano where old ruins could be seen around it. There were a shocking number of eggs for her age, a good 17 of them though it was sure that a few would be duds.
What shocked everyone was that there appeared to be a golden egg! This wasn't the end of dragonkind yet! Candidates were hastily brought together, the best and brightest of a dying breed it seemed. The Hatching came on a day of chaos.'
Sr'yn wrote that last sentence on his death bed, from a Threadscore. Thread had returned after hundreds of years. The Red Star had finally drifted back into a close orbit that allowed it to rain the menace down again, for 50 Turns. But the Hatching was safe in a volcano...the buildings around it were Threadproof. A smart Weyrling Master went to speak to all the dragon riders that survived that attempt to stop Thread from ravaging the land...to start up a Weyr at those ruins and save everyone that they could in the South.
More than likely, Thread had gotten a good part of the North already without anyone knowing. Technology had again failed from ignorance in repairing the devices. Panic probably stopped anyone from sending a fire-lizard, and who would believe Thread's return after so long?
Now though, they had to prepare. The 10 new Weyrlings would be a great asset when they could fly. Yes, only 10, there were 7 duds. Mutations had occured for some unknown reason, but any dragon was a good dragon. All but the Queen could chew fire-stone, so they had more fighters.
There were only about one hundred and fifty dragons left on Pern at the moment, but in the hopes that this new Queen could produce a very large clutch.
16th Pass: Two Turns In
The riders took the old Weyrling Master's advise and restored the old ruins. They are now the only funtioning Weyr for hundreds of years, they call it Nyocia Weyr. Nyocia was lucky for three reasons. One, the volcano that the Old Gold had chosen was in a large crater...these seemed to litter Pern. Two, in the crater...it looked like weyrs had been half dug out already at some point in time. And three, there was a nice large lake in the crater with a small run-off stream. The ruins, the buildings that would become the Candidate Barracks and just random living space for the Beast-Craftsmen and maybe a stingy or nasty Harper every now and then, were a bonus.
A rider came back from the North a Turn ago, sent on a search for any life, there is nothing left. The grubs died out as well, with no Thread to feed on. The only hope for the people of Pern is Nyocia Weyr.
Harper Drevol's Diary:
' The Queen has flown and Clutched! The only bad news is that it is not that big of a clutch. Her first clutch was only 20 eggs! And she was caught by a Bronze! Though in this small clutch appears have a Queen egg in it, and a rather large regular egg.
Hatching Day is here! The Candidates are excited, and should be...oh my! The first to break its shell is a Bronze! Now an odd colored dragon...what is that...I guess a Tan color. Blues and Greens and Browns. OH! The Gold! So beautiful she is! What is that coming out of that larger egg over there? Looks kind of Violet in color...another Queen?'
There were only 2 duds in this second Threadfall Clutch. The Gold Nayarath Impressed to a girl called Kora who looked around 18 Turns. She looked promising to the older Gold-rider.
16th Pass: 3 Turns In
As unfortunate as it is, the next Flight of the older young Gold coincided with that of a Green, causing both to disappear between forever. Now the new Weyrwoman will be either the Violet or Gold Nayarath, whichever flies first.
16th Pass: 5 Turns In - Present Time
Gold Nayarath Flew! The New Weyrwoman is now Kora, and the Weyrleader is now Y'xem of Bronze Alduth.
The Clutch is on the Sands, 26 strong! Who will be lucky and Impress? Impress to help fight Thread!
