History:
Kitti Ping didn't take notes of what she did to the genetic material of the firelizards to create the dragons. However, her daughter had been there through it all, and replicated her mother's work once before she created the whers.
Wind Blossom's work, unlike that of her mother, did not mimic the firelizards in color. Somehow, she had managed to mix the DNA of the green and gold firelizards and made a metallic green dragon. When the dragon hatched, it was female as she had specified. But it was also a deep hunter green with a gold sheen to it. When the first metallic green dragon matured, she failed to chew firestone. Her first mating flgiht was won by a bronze dragon, and out of that clutch came two eggs set aside.
Those two eggs hatched into a gold and a metallic green dragon. This new color was observed for any other kinds of anomalies, but they seemed like perfectly normal dragons except for the color. When it became known that the metallic greens would prove to be almost as common as the golds over the next few decades, they were treated with the same respect as the queens. When the first of the Weyrs was established, the riders of the gold and metallic greens were regarded as Weyrwomen.
Then, shortly after the second Pass began, something unusual happened. By then, it was known that the golds tended to Impress to heterosexual females and the bronzes tended to Impress to heterosexual males. The other dragons chose as they saw fit, with no consideration of the sexuality or gender of the Candidate. It was assumed, with the hatching of the first metallic green, that they would follow along with the golds in Impressing heterosexual females. But then, the metallic green hatchling at Fort Weyr Impressed to a homosexual female. This caused some controversy, as the only breeding male dragons were ridden by heterosexual males. When she flew for the first time, a stand in was provided for the winner, and the Weyrs adapted.
Then, at Benden Weyr not long after the Impression of the homosexual female to the metallic green, a metallic green hatchling Impressed to a heterosexual male Candidate. At this point, the Records were added noting the occurences of the Impressions.
Over the Turns and decades amd centuries, the dragons waxed and waned with the coming and going of Thread and the Red Star. The Weyrs grew in size and number and finally became the five strong Weyrs that protected the northern half of Pern - the southern half well forgotten. Then the arguments and fights began.
In the Interval between the fourth and fifth Passes those rider who rode the metallic green dragons banded together, stating the facts that they were no longer treated as they should be. When the metallic greens had first been created by Wind Blossom, and later found to be clutching dragons, it was deemed that the dragons and riders would be treated as Weyrwomen and Weyrleaders, and the dragons as equal to the golds. In the middle of the Interval the riders set out to found a new Weyr. They were eventually joined by other riders who also felt they weren't treated as they should be at their Weyr.
The one goldrider, a junior from High Reaches who had been trumped out of the Weyrwomanship by a much younger goldrider, suggested they scout out the southern continent. Nobody had bothered with it since Landing. Surely, it must be a desolate wasteland from Threadfall. However, when they scouted the shorelines, they found lush forests and more land than they could have imagined. Following old maps from the Landing time, they found what had been Honshu WeyrHold, though they couldn't read the name on the map.
Nurien, the goldrider, and a few of the other ranking riders agreed that the space was well equipped for a Weyr. Over the next few Turns, they worked on turning it into a habitable space for both dragon and rider. The more they explored the area, the more they found the mountainside had been developed into a Weyr and a Hold. The lake near the Weyr was ideal for fresh water and bathing the dragons, and they found that the water systems used in the northern Weyrs had also been utilized in this one.
The Weyrleaders weyrs were large enough for the large gold dragons and the slightly smaller bronzes nd metallic greens. The other Weyrs, spaced throughout the side of the mountain, were well suited to the other riders. The climate was warmer than that of the northern continent, and food was easy to come by. They were surprised to find heardbeasts and wherries living in the forests at the base of the mountain range. The redfruit there would have put anything grown in Nerat to shame.
The other Weyrs fully expected their renegade riders to return with their tails tucked under, and when they didn't they sent other riders to find out what had happened to them. When the other riders returned with news of a new and flourishing Weyr, the news spread through the Weyrs and Holds and people started flocking to Tillek and other sea Holds to get a ride to the southern continent to this new Weyr. They had heard tales of the resources on the southern continent, and wanted to find out for themselves. When the influx of people landing on the southern continent and getting abandoned got out of control, the riders of Nurien Weyr began waiting at the shore for the ships and scouting for them along the shoreline.
The majority of the people that came over were those holdless in the north. They wanted a hold they could call their own and not get thrown out of for whatever reason. They all wanted something to work for. The ones that didn't were told to try their best in the wilds of the southern continent. Sometimes their remains were found, sometimes they weren't. When it was discovered that developing a new Hold would not be easy, the flow of people slowed to a light trickle. Finally, those that would not work were weeded out and those that could not were taken care of. The area of Honshu had been so developed as to house a full Hold and Weyr in the same mountain.
When the fifth Pass was upon them, Nurien Weyr had gained a full Hold and fighting Weyr. They protected the southern continent and their immediate holdings as best they could, but it was inevitable that Thread would get past the flames of the dragons and burrow deep into the ground. It was then that they discovered there was a grub, from the time of Landing, that had laced it's way over the entire continent. The grub ate the Thread that burrowed into the ground, and stopped it from destroying the entire continent. This made Threadfall that much less stressful for the Wings and the ground crews that followed behind them. The Weyr no longer had to worry about sweeping for Thread burrows far away from the actual Weyr. They could focus on their immediate area, and the holdings that depended on them.
The Weyr thrived for centuries, and became a power on the southern continent that the northern Weyrs had never thought could be possible.
Currently, the Weyr is headed by Weyrwoman Jullianya riding gold Ferth, Junior Weyrwoman Ylana riding metallic green Obeth. Weyrleader J'kahn riding metallic green Uskath and Junior Weyrleader B'net riding bronze Imoth control the Weyr behind the Weyrwomen. A male rider of a metallic green is given the Weyrleader spot indefinitely. Since it became normal for a metallic green dragon to choose either gender to Impress to, the position of Weyrleader at Nurien Weyr had not been a rotational position depending on which bronze caught the gold. Instead, it became a fixed position much like that of the Weyrwoman, with any other men whose dragons caught the flying junior queen becoming the Junior Weyrleader. The northern Weyrs did not do this, and it made Nurien Weyr all the more alluring to other riders who felt they were mistreated at their current Weyr.
