The Person
About the Person:
Historical Facts:
For Candidates:
Name: Kinah
Age: 16 Turns
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Candidate (formerly an apprentice vintner)
About the Person:
Physical Appearance: Kinah does not adhere to the usual cookie-cutter of a female candidate. She is not curvy, thin, beautiful or well-built. She does not have curly golden hair, nor does she have eyes the color of bluebonnets. At first glance, you might even think her to be plain. But it are all the imperfections which make her so strong and intriguing. She has sharp, aristocratic features which seem too hard and yet are appealing to the right kind of men. She has dirty blonde hair, which is streaked with darker shades of brown and black, and is cut short. Her pixie-like hairstyle gives her a girlish appearance, as her short hair barely reaches past her ears. She usually has a thin headband tossed in among her choppy locks to keep the bangs out of her face. Her eyes are odd – not only are they narrow, but each one is a different color. Her left eye is a bright green while her right is a honey-brown color. Though at first glance you might not notice the oddities of her features, they are most assuredly there. Her curves are miniscule, and usually hidden beneath too-large tunics and pants. She dresses up, on occasion, and tends to wear a lot of brightly colored bangles which contrast with the dismal colors of her tunics. She is a complete and utter anomaly, a perfect mixture of class and edge.
Personality: Kinah, as shown in her appearance, is not your average candidate. She does not profess to be perfect, and she never will. She is ambitious, but not over-reaching. She is honest to a tee, and is sometimes too blunt. She is not beautiful, she does not wear bright colors, nor is she depressed or heartbroken. Her wit and intelligence are far-reaching, and she spends much of her free time reading old records and learning from the craftsmen. She is sort of a jack-of-all-trades, and knows a bit about nearly every topic on Pern. She likes to discover the unknown, to stand up for what she believes is right, and to spend as much time as she can around dragons.
Since she is new to the Weyr, she has yet to establish a reputation for herself, but she hopes to make true friends. Though she is not like many of the other girl candidates, she hopes to fit in with them. Kinah has an insatiable curiosity and loves Weyrlife, but she generally feels as if she is a bramble in a field of daisies. She has always been extremely confident, but among the beautiful and talented people of the Weyr, she is a bit shyer than she normally would be. She is easy to win over, but if she’s hurt, she tends to shut herself off. All in all, she is a good-natured girl with a sharp tongue, quick wit, and wariness about the people around her.
Historical Facts:
Family: Mother – Lydia, Holdswoman, Naroon Hold; Father- Arklin, apprentice healer, Naroon Hold; no siblings
Pets: palomino mare runnerbeast, Nusu
History: Kinah was born at Naroon Hold to her parents. Her mother died during childbirth, but this never seemed to bother Kinah much. Her father was always enough parent for her wild, untamable sprit. She spent a lot of time around the Headwoman as a young child, and could often be found playing around the skirts of the ladies of the Hold. Her mother had been quite popular among them, and yet they didn’t take her in as true friends would have. She was always on the outskirts, flirting on the edge of popularity. Her father didn’t understand the affairs of the women and thus did nothing to advance Kinah’s station within the hold. He was far too busy curing them to worry about securing a good marriage for his daughter or assuring that she was friends with the best people.
Her hardships at the hold were her own. They were miniscule problems which she didn’t burden anyone else with, but when she was given a chance to become part of the winemaking craft, she readily took it. The opportunity suited her perfectly - the vintner craft was vital to Pern, but hardly known. The oddness of it fit her like a glove, and she dedicated herself to it.
She studied as a vintner for quite some time until she received word that her father was dying. When she was fourteen, she bought her first runnerbeast, a palomino mare named Nusu, and returned to Naroon Hold. Her knot tied proudly onto her shoulder, she spent weeks caring for her father. She was with him when he passed, and her death affected her so deeply that she refused to return to winemaking. She untied her knots and began to busy herself around the Hold. She took up her father’s role as Healer, as she had a bit of knowledge of his craft, but his job did not fit her well. Kinah was not good at interacting with the ladies and lords of the Hold and soon abandoned this task. Instead, she worked in the stables and trained their runners, where she made a good amount of Marks.
In reality, she was simply biding her time until another Search occurred. Finally, when Lilith was close to rising, a Search Rider came to Naroon and she was taken back to the Weyr. Friendless and alone, she insisted on bringing Nusu to the Weyr with her. She spends a lot of her time doing chores, reading and riding Nusu, and her anticipation for the Hatching increases with every day.
For Candidates:
Name Change: n/a
Dragon Preference: Sunshine, Waterfall, or Forest (Sand or Grass are okay too, but the other three are preferred!)
Why: Sunshine and waterfall would fit well with her because she is extremely strong-willed and I believe she would make a good, level-headed queenrider, especially with her extensive knowledge of Pern and her quick wit. The Forest seems to be an odd dragon, just like Kinah, so I also think that would be a good fit. However, she simply wants to Impress a dragon, so Sand or Grass (or any color) would be wonderful!
Other: Packtail, fellis juice
