Fourteenth Pass
Second Turn
Southern Weyr
Southern Weyr is a beautiful Weyr. The land is green, trees are common, and rainfall coincides with Threadfall. The grubs, made a Pass ago by a scientist long dead, have done their job wonderfully. If a single Thread spore gets through the nearly-impenetrable force of dragons, the grubs will gobble it up. Because of this, the land is exotic and the creatures that inhabit it can live in peace and harmony.
Fourteenth Pass
Last Turn
Southern Weyr
Doing their duty, the grubs have helped the South survive. This wonderful place is being guarded many times over, first by the grubs, second by the Dragonriders, and third by the Weyr and Holdfolk that love their land. Unfortunately, the end of the Pass is coming, and the grubs will have nothing to feed on. This coming interval will be hard on the grubs.
Fifteenth Interval
Two Turns before the Next Pass
Southern Weyr
The grubs are dying. Slowly yet surely the grubs are dying, and no one realizes it. No one knows why the grubs are dying, because they’ve lived ever since the first Crossing. The grubs’ death comes with some horrible side-effects. When each hundred-worth of grubs die, they release some type of gas into the air that taints the air. This gas does not affect humans, only dragons. This gets into the dragon’s sex glands. It affects their eggs and sperm. Then, one day, a Hatching occurred. At this Hatching there were many different candidates, all expecting a host of normal colors. Green, Blue, Bronze, maybe a Gold, but never the colors that showed themselves. Instead, new colors came out. This clutch was small, only eight eggs, but almost every single one was a different color.
Fifteenth Pass
Second Turn
New Southern Weyr
Southern Weyr really couldn’t be called Southern Weyr anymore. These colors were colors only for Southern Weyr, no other Weyrs in existence had them. Not like many Weyrs existed now. High Reaches, Ista, and Igen had already lost their Queens. Only two Turns back, both Benden and Telgar Weyrs lost their last Queen. There had been no Queen eggs on the sands. There were only two Weyrs in existence now, Fort and Southern. But Southern was no longer a traditional Weyr. With these new colors, Southern could no longer be called Southern. Now another Queen is ready to rise in Southern Weyr. Now another clutch has been laid. Now more funny colors have spouted from the eggs, ready to Bond with their lifemates. These funny dragonets had been appearing in Clutches for at least five Turns before.
No, Southern Weyr was, and still is, no longer called Southern Weyr, but instead New Southern Weyr. The new Junior Weyrwoman has named it thus. The Senior Weyrwoman was ailing, and had given most of the command over to her Junior. Her Junior Weyrwoman was tasked with much during this time, and at first she had not realized that the grubs were ailing. In fact, there was less than a tenth of the grubs that there had been before. When Thread began to fall, the dragonriders had thought they were defended by the grubs. It was only when Thread started to fall, and gather in burrows in the ground, did the Southern Continent begin to worry.
Then the Senior Weyrwoman's dragon did not rise. Zenniel, rider of Gold Lilith, was given the Senior Weyrwoman position because her Gold was the only other Queen in the Weyr.
This is the beginning of the Third Turn.
