"Yeah, whatever happens, I think I'll stay here." Kay agreed. Fennore had already said something about riders being cute hadn't she? Maybe that's what she was talking about when she said that she thought she would probably Impress a Grass. Forgetful.
Kay laughed. "Yeah, I guess I do. Silly Arrow." She grinned at the fire-lizard, who rumbled happily. No, he didn't mind being called a nursemaid if it made His happy.
Arrow chirped back to Kia, his eyes whirling cheerily. He was liking this approval of what he had done, however silly it may have seemed. Well, he didn't want Kay to forget to eat. It was a good thing she listened to him. Everyone should listen to fire-lizards.
"Yeah, hopefully we will." Kay giggled as Arrow nuzzled her arm. Maybe she would Impress a pretty Forest like him. "What if there was a Sunshine and it Impressed you?" Both Candidate and flitt glanced at Fennore inquiringly. Arrow liked to mimic Kay.

No, not forgetful. Just...Fennore babbled. And sometimes, she said things twice because she wasn't thinking. And then she furrowed her brow.
"Weirdly, I don't think I want a sunshine." Kia squawked. "I don't mean *you*."
She had to stop to laugh at her firelizard's indignation. "I don't think I'm cut out for the risk of leading the Weyr some day. Nah, I want a grass, or maybe a sea or snow, I'm not somebody who'd be put off by having a male dragon. And I think the sunshine, if there is one, will know that and not pick me."

"I guess." Kay shrugged. "I'd love to have a Sunshine... but I don't know that one would pick me." But she could hope at least. Or maybe one of those beautiful silver Waterfalls.
Of course... if she Impressed a female dragon then there was the chance that her brother's Mineral could fly her. That would be so awkward. Or maybe her dragon would be careful and not let him. "What about an Earth or Forest?" Arrow hrrred softly. He liked the idea of His Impressing a Forest.
Kay laughed and tickled Arrow's chin. "I meant Fennore," she whispered to the fire-lizard. He only bumped her cheek with his head, his eyes a happy green. At least someone was mentioning his color, it seemed to have been left out in a lot of the conversation.

Fennore hrmed. "I don't know about forests. Earths seem too, well...*too* masculine. A sea I could see myself with. An Earth no. Forests Impress same gender, though, so...I suppose."
One of the big greens might not be a bad dragon to have. "I hear forests tend to be, well, grumpy though."
She wasn't sure she wanted a *grumpy* dragon. Or a depressed one like storms were rumored to be. She thought she'd rather have sand than storm. Then again...she could cheer most people up. So, maybe it wouldn't be that bad.

"Arrow isn't grumpy." Kay tickled the flitt and he purred. "Of course, he's a fire-lizard and is really too shy to be grumpy." She laughed as he tossed his head in an irritable manner and Arrow rumbled at his own joke too. "I don't think I'd want a grumpy dragon either though... we'd have to make it happy, huh Arrow?"
Arrow scrambled onto her shoulder and sat down with a happy flick of his tail. That was quickly developing into his favorite perch and the little Forest never seemed to spend much time away from it. Of course, the movement hadn't seemed much like an answer to Kay, but she didn't press the question.
Kay figured she would rather have a female dragon, whatever the color. Although, probably not a Storm Cloud simply because they were reknowned for being unhappy and lazy and no-one being able to do a thing about it. She didn't want a lazy dragon. A Sand, maybe a Forest, would be lovely.

Fennore hrmed. "Firelizards are different, a little. Although maybe not queens." She gave Kia a fond look.
She would handle whatever dragon she happened to Impress. Of that she was sure. "But yeah, if I got a grumpy or miserable dragon, I'd be trying to cheer it up. Of course, I've been accused of being *too* cheerful, so maybe one would balance me out some."
Kia chirpled something to Arrow, then turned into a shoulder ornament herself, her tail already almost long enough to make a necklace. A necklace of gold. Fennore knew that although her dragon would, by the nature of things, be first in her heart...Kia would always have her own little corner.

"Maybe." Kay smiled. Arrow chirped- fire-lizards weren't that different. They were just a lot smaller and didn't talk in the same way.
"I wonder what it is that makes some of the dragons so unhappy anyways." Kay pursed her lips thoughtfully. "They practically own the sky, get everything they need; the only thing they need to do is go fight Thread every once in a while, and with their best friend too." She shook her head. Maybe they had gotten snooty over the years.
Arrow cocked his head, looking at the little Sunshine curiously. The Forest let his own tail hang down Kay's back, its dark tip reaching well past her shoulder-length hair. The rest of his little body was mounted carefully on Kay's shoulder, the pincer-like claws of his feet closed gently on the fabric of her shirt. At nearly 40 centimeters, he was one of the larger Forests and definately took up his fair share of space on her shoulder. Kia would surely grow a fair bit larger and make a pretty heavy ornament for Fennore to carry around.

Fennore hrmed. "I hear storms are just that way, same as earths are kind of stoic and grasses are flirty."
She flickered a grin, then regarded the forest. "I hope Kia won't grow too big to *fit* on my shoulder." Fennore was not a large woman, and a sunshine could grow to a decent size. "Arrow looks like he's struggling a bit there."
Kia nibbled affectionately at Fennore's dark hair, against which her brilliance was quite the contrast.

"Yes, but depressed?" Kay couldn't quite get that. Earth and Grass personalities seemed explainable, but what was the point of being unhappy all the time? Was that really possible in the first place? That would be hard... could you really be unhappy if you had never been happy? Of course, anyone else could lable the Storm Clouds unhappy or the Forests grumpy... but what did they think?
An interesting thought indeed. Kay decided she could consider it later. "Yeah, Arrow has a little trouble holding on sometimes." She grinned at the Forest. "We're both getting used to it though, huh? I'm sure Kia will be fine, I've seen plenty of people with Sunshines on their shoulders back at Naroon. Although it's often both shoulders that they lay across." Then there were those people with fire-lizards that perched on their heads... that would be odd. She didn't want Arrow on her head, and so far it seemed he didn't particularly want to perch their either.
Arrow watched Kia curiously and murmured something or other softly to himself. The little Forest seemed to talk to himself a lot. That, Kay thought, would be another habit she would get him out of. How many goals was that now? She wanted him more outgoing, more willing to get his own food, to talk to himself less... Kay was sure she would think of more for the flitt. Arrow, catching her thoughts, gave her a worried look.

Fennnore grinned. "Maybe she'll take to perching on my dragon. I've seen that." She'd seen quite a number of firelizards, both wild and bonded, hanging out on dragon neckridges. She supposed the dragons appreciated the company.
Kia chirpled to Arrow, sounding encouraging. Perhaps she agreed with Kay about the forest and his shyness. Perhaps she was just liking the sound of her own voice. "And if she ends up having to lie across my shoulders to stay on, I don't mind."

"That would work too." Kay nodded and smiled. But she would rather Arrow perched on her shoulder, cumbersome as he could be at times. A dragon couldn't go everywhere with you like a fire-lizard could.
Arrow chirped back to Kia, turning his gaze quickly from Kay to talk to the Sunshine. He didn't quite like the idea of all the goals His was coming up with for him. The Forest was quite content with himself, and even more so now that he could remain in Kay's company. No, Arrow wasn't quite encouraged by Kia, whatever she had said.
"I'm glad Arrow can hold on to one shoulder, if I ever get another flitt it'll need somewhere to perch." Arrow gave Kay another surprised look- he thought she had been very happy with just him. Kay laughed and gave the fire-lizard's nose a soft tap. "Aw, wouldn't you like having a little brother or sister to play with?" Arrow still looked uncertain.

Fennore nodded. "I wouldn't turn down another one, but probably when Kia gets a bit older...and hopefully my dragon, too. Don't want to end up with too much work to do at once."
Kia chirpled again. She definitely approved of Fennore getting another firelizard...especially a male she could boss around. Of course, this forest was rather interesting...although she was too young to yet consider him 'cute'.
She considered. A forest dragon wouldn't be so bad, really. But she would not have the choice, knew it and accepted it.

"Yeah, I'll probably wait too... if I Impress a dragon then it'll probably be a while before I try to get another flitt." Even if she didn't, it would probably be a while. Kay rubbed Arrow's head with a fingertip. "No need to worry right now, huh?" She had heard how much young dragonets ate, and already knew how much fire-lizard hatchlings did. Feeding them both- along with all the other care needed for hatchlings- would be very hard.
Arrow only looked at Kia this time, apparently unsure of a reply. The little Forest was not much of a conversationalist, as the Sunshine would probably soon discover. Instead, he settled more comfortably on Kay's shoulder and yawned. Against her back, Arrow's tail curled slightly, seemingly in reflex of his mouth opening.

Fennore nodded. "Besides...I have a queen, what more do I need? Males for her to order around, I guess."
Kia did not even look indignant. She was not denying that. "Besides, as good companions as they are, I'm in no hurry to collect an entire fair."
Kia might, mind, be rather insistent on that. Some people had got two at the same Hatching, she was glad she had not. One at a time, she thought, was good. Fennore looked thoughtful. "Man. I'm running out of things to say."

"There are plenty of males around here anyways who'll probably listen to her." Kay laughed. Arrow did at least, although he had forgotten for a moment earlier. Probably others would too. Arrow tossed his head and looked around the kitchens with mildly whirling eyes. He didn't want to be reminded of that particular mistake.
"Neither am I. One or two flitts are plenty in my opinion. I can't believe those people who end up with half a dozen." She shook her head and remembered the little old lady back at Naroon who had given her Arrow's egg. There had always been a little cloud of fire-lizards around her. Some had been wild and just hung around because she fed them, but many had been hers too.
"Yeah." Kay shifted in her seat. "I guess we have chores to get to too, hmm?" The one thing she didn't like as much about being a Candidate, although these chores were no worse than the ones she had to do at home. She had simply been thinking that going to the Weyr would be an escape from everything. There might be more food, but there was still a bossy Headwoman who reminded Kay sometimes of her own mother and lots of work for the Candidates...

Fennore stood up. "Yeah. Got to do our share of the work
Fennore did not mind doing drudge work. She was used to it, and besides...when she became a rider, she would never have to do it again. Just washing a dragon...that was a bit like drudge work, but she was sure that if it was her dragon, she wouldn't mind at all.
Not that she thought being a rider was easy. But most of it would, surely, be more interesting than the cleaning and sweeping the candidates kept getting stuck with...

Arrow clutched Kay's shoulder tightly and half-spread his wings as His stood to keep steady on her shoulder at Kay stood too. She nodded to Fennore. "Yeah. Guess I'll see you later then." Arrow chirped his own goodbye to Kia.
Hopefully it wouldn't be too long before Lilith flew and then laid a clutch... then they'd have to wait for it to hatch. Kay didn't mind working much, it was something she and probably most people were used to, but the thought of leaving the Candidate chores behind and raising a dragon seemed much more interesting. Of course that would be hard work too, but it wouldn't be constantly cleaning up other people's messes.
